* Egregious is defined as outstandingly bad or shocking.
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race
had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the
thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. –
Genesis 6:5
“Character is who you are when nobody else is watching.” What would
we do if we thought we wouldn’t get caught? I know a young girl who
loves to watch TV. Once, when she was instructed to learn her Chinese
spelling, she promptly announced after 10 minutes that she had finished
learning all the words and proceeded to watch TV for 90 minutes.
However, the test revealed otherwise; she got most of the words wrong!
This seven-year-old lied so that she could watch TV. Where did she
learn to tell lies?
Wesley’s view that sin was a disease meant that it was not a ‘thing’ that
we could just cut off.
9 Wesley wrote, “Now he truly desires to break
loose from sin and begins to struggle with it. But though he strive with
all his might, he cannot conquer; sin is mightier than he.”10 However,
sin’s egregiousnessa does not imply hopelessness, “we cannot try hard
enough, learn enough, worship enough, or work enough to heal
ourselves... the only option is transformation.”11
Reflection 反思
Think of your own experience. Have you ever felt helpless over sin in
your life? In what ways did God take the initiative to bring you to
acknowledge your helplessness?
